First Entry for Julia Kay's Portrait Party: Ujwala Prabhu
So I finally got around to doing a portrait for Julia Kay's Portrait Party; this one is of Ujwala Prabhu! Didn't do a great job on the skin tone, but I'm still learning. It's done in a tiny little sketchbook (only 3.5" X 5.5") I made as per directions from Sketchalina. I know I'm always complaining about sketchbooks being so small, but this one needed to fit in a small fanny pack that I have for walking. I think the size made me paint tighter than I normally do...if that' s even possible!!
I also posted some pictures of myself, for those who were wondering if I actually look like that little cartoon icon or not! It's here. It's been a busy weekend for me, so I'll be catching back up with you all tomorrow! Have a great weekend!!

The skin reads as real. You are doing really well on these portraits. Her eyes are wonderful. I can see where she's looking towards. I think this is terrific. Tighter yes, than some others I've seen but if that is your style right now it's best to accept it and still work on the portrait part. Later you can try loosening up.
ReplyDeleteYour sketch portrait is fabulous!!! And you my dear are so pretty!! You look like such a fun person too- somehow JUST how I imagined you!
ReplyDeleteI thought you were going to wait until portrait no. 99 until we knew what you look like. Turns out your portrait no. 3 is awfully close - excellent job! It's fun now knowing what my long-distance partner actually looks like. [PS, I actually penciled in (yes, penciled - I'm nervous - don't want to screw it up) our joint page. I'd hoped to be further but, well..]
ReplyDeleteYour portrait of Ujwala is excellent. Very, very good likeness (judging from the photo). And the skin tone is great. What I love is the shading, and how the face is molded. You've added more values this time to the face then I remember seeing on any other in the past to wonderful effect.
Excellent job!!
PS - If you haven't done so already, check out the fascinating video at Myrna Wacknov's blog at http://myrnawacknov.blogspot.com/2010/05/great-video.html The values and colors he uses - so bold, and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteLove the portrait! Really nice skintones and atmosphere! Now I am going to peak and see what you look like ;)
ReplyDeleteWell number three is a very good likeness of you looking serious - nice set of photos you've got there! I think this is a very good likeness with a strong sense of personality and all that your skin tones need are a little warmth (okay you know me enough by now to know I'll be honest about these things I think!) - they are a little pinker than they need to be for Asian skin. I don't know how you manged to do this on such a tiny piece of paper tho!
ReplyDeleteJust terrific! You are going to have so much fun.
ReplyDeleteGreat portrait Raena.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your power going off(ours didn't but always unplug my modem just in case it gets close enough to zap the PC)
Keep going, I'm looking forward to your next self portrait
Great portrait on such a small piece of paper. Nice photos, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment re above on my blog. Sometimes, after I've been honest I doubt myself, but I feel it'd be doing you a disservice not to be honest. Anyway, keep at it, I really admire you draughtmanship, and I'm looking forward to more portraits.
ReplyDeleteI recognized Ujwala before reading the name. You are great at portraits and self portraits!
ReplyDeletevery interesting the video for making sketchbook, very tempting idea.
I love your collection of portraits. It is amazing what you can get down in 5 minutes.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog and welcoming me back.
That's a great portrait!
ReplyDeleteI agree, you've done a fabulous job on such a small piece of paper. I've always wondered what Julia Kay's Portrait Parties were all about. Thanks for posting the link, and how nice to see the REAL RAENA! Yay! You are quite lovely, my dear.
