A Glorious, Sunshiny Day!!

The sun came out and I could think of no better way to celebrate the occasion than to lie down in the grass, smell the earth, and soak up some of that precious vitamin D I've been craving! (well, no better way that was practical at the time!) Of course, I had my sketchbook with me, much to the dismay of my fellow celebrator!

This began as a blob of paint that I used to test the paper of a new journal I got from Hobby Lobby-- a 7" X 10" spiral bound Canson Mixed Media journal. About a week later, I was wanting to doodle but felt stymied by the blank white page, so I flipped back through previous pages looking for a place to stick a doodle. That is what all the mini portraits were about...fear of facing a new white page, and instead of jumping in there, I found small places on previous pages to cram in some sketches. Well, at least I did draw! And the picture above is that fearsome blank white page.

This is another of those tiny portraits I did. An inchie. It is loosely based on Capt Elaine's profile photo. Really, I should say "influenced by" because I really, really felt like drawing and I saw her icon and in a couple of seconds had this down. I know Elaine has to be thinking, that doesn't look like me at all! And she would be right. I was basically jotting down the composition, maybe we could just call it taking visual notes. I loved the way the dog came out.

I caught this guy's profile for only a second. I was happy with how well I caught his likeness. Only, he was walking, and was wearing an orange jumper. I didn't get any of that down fast enough so I made up this little scene. The orange came out a little (lot) stronger than I like. I think I'll go back and change the color of the background. There's too much competition with his face.

  3. I LOVE these!!!! Thanks for the inspiration to do a line drawing over a page that has been painted with a graded wash. Great idea! And I noticed you tagged the post with Lamy Safari, which is interesting because I was really upset about how none of my pens was working well on the Arches CP paper in my sketchbook. Then I pulled out my Lamy and voilla! It just needed a fountain pen. Now I'm double happy. Thanks for the great post.

  6. These pictures are lovely - your observational studies are so good, I need to get out and do more 'from life' stuff. Great work!

  8. Great work! You really have talent for capturing the "personality" of people and objects in your drawings. How long does it take you to do them?

PS: I envy your sun :)

  11. Splendid sketches, every one! I especially love the one with the dog because that dog looks so much like one of my beloved doggies who's had a celestial discharge. I'm going to have to try those inchie portraits - I love what you've done with them! nancy

  13. OK - I have a new sketchbook that you know about with daunting white pages. The first page is always the hardest because I always want perfection, and I manage to avoid that problem further down in the book - but it will be done..it will. And then the problem will be someone else's. :) (Maybe we should have called it "Hot Potato")

I love every one of your sketches in this post! I think you are really getting better and better. The first is tight, well done, and I love the border. The second looks like a professional illustration in a science fiction novel. I love the loose quality of the third and the monochrome color scheme. I think it is neat how on the fourth you were able to preserve the profile image in your head. I'm getting better at doing this too. And I love how glazes enable us to change colors!

  14. Whoops - my imagination went a bit wild. When I enlarged number 2 - no science fiction. lol.

  15. These all are delightful sketches. My favorites are the first two. You dealt with 'the fear of blank page' well!

  16. Very nice! I love the doodle, and I will happily try the idea of your mini portraits and doodles. I might even go so far as to putting down colour here and there as a base for a doodle like that. The mini portraits of your previous post are wonderful too.

    Well done!

  17. Thank you all very much! On this post, only the one with Elaine is an inchie. The others are larger. The first one is about 3" X 4". I think the blob is 2X2, and the last is about 1.5 X 2.5. I think I might try to frame the first one (it's my favorite, and my husband), but that would mean cutting it out of a sketchbook. Maybe I'll just make a second one!

Dan: I would say ha-ha on facing that white page, but it would be pointless, I'll be facing something harder soon--trying to keep the quality up. As for the science fiction, you made me want to add a few UFOs!

All: I'm very surprised at how much you like the blob doodle. I almost didn't post it. Now I'm thinking I should try it more often!
