Grandma, painted

Okay, I did it. And I am happy with the results. I knew it was just a trial run so I was able to relax and experiment. I see things I think need touching up, like the jacket, and maybe some shadows. Anyone with advice on how to improve it? This one is on actual watercolor paper. Amazing the difference using the right paper makes!

Now on to paint the domino players. I am going to try the adding-soap-to-the-rinse-water trick, to see what happens. Experiments! I feel like I need a white lab coat and some coke-bottle glasses (oh wait, already have those!)...maybe a beaker or two!

  1. This is a super sketch. I like how you have kept the detailing more to your Grandma's face, so there is no distraction.

  2. This is lovely. The colors for her skin tones are beautiful. I think it's perfect just the way it is!

  6. Really nice! I'm so glad you colored her, because I felt yesterday I didn't adequately complement you on this fine drawing as well and now I have the chance. (I was too excited about the dominoes.) You are right to be happy with it; it is a fine portrait, delicate, tender and proud.

  7. Whoops - forgot to tell you - I typed in the copyright language on my blog. I, too, found it on another blog, and thought it was well-stated. Don't know about the name issue and I would check - a good search term to be used with "copyright" might be "alias". I think you are correct to use your actual name in the meantime. Of course, to me, Raena is your real name.

  8. I knew this would come out really good as soon as I saw the outlines, and true enough it is!
If you're saying that you only took 30 minutes to do the sketch, and that you don't really have the patience to spend anymore time doing it... I don't believe you :) Because all I see on this one is a lot of details that's filled with care and love. We all know both of that takes a lot of patience right? ^^

  10. Thank you all so much! I am proud of this one! It's ashame the likeness is so close, but not quite there. I'll be giving this one another go and I think I'll be more comfortable this time, since I've had practice!
