Malloy & Sons

I really liked this sketch. And then I tried to paint it. I like the way it looks when its small, but goodness gracious does it look terrible in person and up close! That's okay. I'm not crushed! It's just a step toward my masterpiece, right?

Anyway, I've been thinking. I'm not working right now and I need to start some cash flow. There's monetizing, which yes I know is next to nothing, but it's something. I've also been thinking about putting together a pamphlet on basic perspective for artists. Do you think it would sell? I'm not ready for prints of my work. I think I still have a ways to go before that. But, one thing I do know is perspective. So what do you think? Do you hate ads? Personally, they only bother me if they are the flashing, obtrusive kind.

I almost forgot, this is the Malloy & Sons Funeral Home in Galveston, TX. Colored from photo that I took.

  1. My thoughts on cash flow: You need to think - who has money and will want to spend it on what you have to give? That is your target market. I saw one artist, for example, that paints very small oil paintings for the rich folks with doll houses that have blank walls. Now that is clever! Re ads, - dunno, would have to see. Re the drawing of the funeral home - phenomenal, and the coloring - unique and interesting in a good way! :) I certainly see nothing wrong with it.

  2. I cannot imagine that your painting would look horrible bigger and upclose... but I'm not there to judge. It looks wonderful to me... fabulous even.
I too am out of work right now and so I have also been thinking about what to do to bring some money in... I have decided that I would put it "out there" that I would teach art journaling classes. I will see if I get any bites. As for perspective drawing... many people struggle with that (me being one of them)... I think it can't hurt trying. Put it "out there" and see what you get from there.
    Hope that helps.

  3. Hi Raena,
bahhh! this is a fabulous image.
I say go forit! nothing to loose but everything to gain. HOwever, I agree with Dan and you really have to find out what your market is... some advice that i will be taking as well.
Good luck and keep us up to date on how it works.

  4. I think this is a fantastic job, and flawless if you ask me. :) Great pespective, nice angle, love the trees in the foreground, even the greens seem to be having just the right shades. Welldone Raena!!!
And on cashflow, I really have no idea too. I'll be jobless after December too, and I am not sure if I'll get my day job back which is really mind-boggling. So if you have any idea, I am all ears too :)

  5. Well, I did look 'up close' by clicking on your sketch - and I thought it still looked great! I especially like the way you have used red - bringing it into the lower right was clever!

  6. Well done ! I love it and even when I enlarged the picture, I couldn't see any flaws. As for perspective, I wouldn't mind drawing it as you do : you're really good at it!

  7. I agree - if you can make perspective something less than a difficult task for folks I think it's worth a shot (what's that called - sending it up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes?)Wonderful drawing, looks great up close too.

  8. The first thing I noticed when I saw this painting is the great perspective. And it is something many of us struggle with. So I say look into it.

and the painting itself is great.

  9. Being laid off myself right now....people tell me that I need to be creative and come up with unique ideas (like the paintings for doll houses). I'm trying to continue some programs that I did while "employed" only I do the billing. I was thinking about doing a nature journaling class at our "local converted factory into art spaces" place, but I haven't approached them yet.

I made your picture as large as I could on my 17" screen and it looked great!

  10. I think it's a wonderful painting! We continue to be our own worst critics. I wonder if paintings of people's houses would sell. You certainly do a great job with architecture, and in the right neighborhood (think Hi End), I think people would love to have a painting of their home. Just a thought. nancy

  15. Hi Raena, Thanks for stopping by my blog and joining.
So many people are out of work. I have been utilizing my art in many ways. I have painted houses for people, designed gardens while we sit in their yards and I sketch what they want to see, logos for people out of work and need to start something on their own, portraits of pets and children, teach art and crafts, well I will just try anything. I also barter, love those local eggs and tomatoes. The ads, I don’t know. You will have to let me know on that one. Love your blog, I have enjoyed going through it this morning. Hugs, Pat
